The Lower Ninth Ward and the Second Line, swagged out and gleaming with pride. Their neighborhood was hit the hardest by Hurricane Katrina and still showed signs of dismay 8 years later. The people in this photo essay grew up there, weathered the storm and came back to reclaim their home.
As we literally crossed the railroad tracks from the upper to the lower ninth ward, there were people posted up on every corner waiting for the parade. There was pageantry everywhere. Bright colors, bikers with leather jackets and children with hair laid in fresh braids.
We stopped as many interesting faces as we could and asked their story. What was their style inspiration and whose style influenced them the most? These photos are the result.
